Iceland Recovery

Monday we woke up at 3am to head to the airport. It was a weird drive because the sun was already up. After a short flight back to London, we were all exhausted so we just relaxed in the flat for the rest of the day.

Tuesday was another chill day to recover from our busy trip. We slept in really late and then went to the grocery store to do some necessary shopping. We then just chilled in the flat until our parents got into town. We went to the tube station to meet them when they got here. It was so nice to see them after a month. We went with them to check into their hotel before heading to our favorite pub. We got some food and drinks and went through our pictures to tell them all about our time here so far. We then went to another pub across the street (obviously this was dad’s suggestion). It was a fun night and so good to see them. -SYD & SAM

Golden Circle and Southern Iceland

Saturday July 6th- Today we decided to drive the well-known Golden Circle. We slept in a little bit because we were all exhausted from the long day before. We had lunch in the apartment before making dinner to pack for the road. We all loaded up in the car to drive to our first destination: Thingvellir National Park. On the way we saw a small parking area in front of mountains and fields so we decided to pull over for a bit. It was so peaceful and beautiful. We then got back in the car to finish our drive to Thingvellir. Here we were able to see Iceland’s largest lake and a fissure that was created by the movements from the tectonic plates. There was a lookout pier where we were able to see mountains and the water which was so pretty. We spent a little while walking around the park before heading to the next stop: The Great Geysir. The geyser went off every 5-10 minutes and shot water up to 20 meters high. It was so cool to see the water bubble up before exploding out. Our next stop was Gullfoss Waterfall. This was probably our favorite stop of the day. We were able to see a huge rainbow stretching across the entire waterfall. It was the largest waterfall we have ever seen and it was stunning. It was a few levels high and the water was rushing with so much power. We spent a lot of time here taking in the view and listening to the water crashing. Our last stop of the day was Kerid Crater. This was a huge crater with a little pond at the bottom. There were SOOOO many bugs people were wearing bug nets. However, it was still so cool to walk down to the crater and also look down from above. It’s crazy how something so cool like that can be natural. We then drove back to Reykjavik where we went to get ice cream at Valdis. We figured it had to be good because the line was out the door every night. We waited around 45 minutes and man was it worth it. It was the perfect end to such an amazing day. We then went home, planned tomorrows adventure, and went to bed.

Sunday July 7th- Today we left around 10 am and headed off for the southern coast of Iceland. Our first stop of the day was Seljalandsfoss waterfall. It was very different from the one we saw yesterday. This one had a smaller stream but higher. We were able to walk around the whole waterfall. It was a very cool experience. We did have a little trouble walking up the hills on wet rocks in our shoes (next time we need to bring proper hiking boots) but it was still fun! After that we ended up stopping on the side of the road to go pet some horses. They were so calm. They were on a really pretty piece of land and seemed to have acres to roam. It was a great little stop. Just down the road we saw a cute little farm with a beautiful mountain with snow behind it. Well, at least we thought it was just a mountain (more on that later). We took some cute pictures, saw a lady fall in a metal grate in the ground, and headed off for our second planned stop of the day, Skogafoss waterfall. Again, this was different than the other two but still just as beautiful. Here we saw a gorgeous rainbow and were able to get super close to the stream. We were also able to climb 429 stairs (yes, I counted) to see the waterfall from above. The climb was worth it because the view was beautiful. After that stop we made another unplanned stop in a field of Alaskan Lupine flowers. These flowers come from Alaska but were introduced to Iceland to produce more Nitrogen and better the soil. However, they are an invasive species and have taken over a lot of the land. They are very beautifully and kind of remind me of lavender. We then headed out to a town called Vik to see two major landmarks. One being, Dyrholaey, an arch at the end of a peninsula. We had to drive up a very steep, windy, and gravel road to get there. It was scary to drive up and some jerk passed a bunch of us on the way, but the view was incredible. The water was so blue and the arch was beautiful. It was very pretty! Next we stopped at Reynisfjara, a black sand beach with caves and basalt sea stacks. We must have walked 2 miles on that beach. It was so cool to see all the caves and climb the hexagonal basalt columns, and see the sea stacks. The contrast from the gray caves, black sand, and blue water was beautiful. This was one of our favorite stops of the day. On our way back stopped at Solheimjokull, a glacier. It was very pretty, but also sad. Each year it shrinks the size of an olympic swimming pool (global warming and climate change are real people, please be mindful and save this beautiful Earth). We hiked down to the base of the glacier and saw some climbers coming in for the night. It was a really cool stop on our adventure. Our final stop of the day was at a volcano called Eyjafallajokull. When we arrived, we were all a little confused because we had all been here before. Remember that thing I said was a mountain with snow on top? Well, that was actually a volcano. We had already stopped there without realizing it. We all had a good laugh and decided to take a few more pictures of it before heading home. It was another beautiful day in Iceland and once again we were exhausted when we got home. This Iceland trip has been the absolute best and we were so sad to be going home tomorrow (Monday). Iceland is our favorite place we have ever been! -SYD & SAM

Iceland Road-trip

We’re back! We had such long and busy days in Iceland so when we got home we just we just went to bed. We are back in London now so we will be able to blog more. Before we talk about London again though, lets recap on some things we did in Iceland.

On Friday July 5th, we decided to drive over to the Reykjanes Peninsula. We made up a path to take around the area with various stops that we thought would be cool. For us planning this on our own with no real route to follow, I would say it was pretty successful! We woke up around 8:30 to pack our lunch and dinner and hit the road by 9:30. The drive was absolutely beautiful! On one side of the road it looked like Mars. It was all rocks and dirt. On the other side it was all green, hilly, and full of wild flowers. It was so insane the contrast just on the other side of the road. It was something we have never experienced before. The views on the drive were so stunning. Some of our drive times were about 2 hours, but it only felt like a few minutes because we were all so captivated by the landscape. Our first stop of the day was near some mountains. This was on the side of the road that looked like Mars. While walking through there alone, it felt like we were living in a post-apocalyptic world. It was so neat. After that we drove just across the street and hiked up a little hill to get a view of all the wild flowers and beautiful green grass. It was very calming to walk through the grass. Our next stop was at a place called Brimketill, a lava rock pool. We were able to climb on these rocks and see a few little pools that have been created due to the beating waves. It was so beautiful up there. We loved just climbing on the rocks and watching the waves crash below us. Our fourth stop of the day was at a bridge called “the bridge between Continents.” It is a bridge that connects the North American and Eurasian plates. It is one of the only places you are able to do this. It was a really cool experience. We then stopped in a town called Grindavik. It is a really cute little town. While we were there we saw the tallest lighthouse in Iceland. It made for a very pretty photo because the sky was so blue and clear that day! We then headed to our favorite stop of the day. One that we had not originally planned but added on last minute. We went to the Hafnarberg sea cliffs. We were the only people out there so it was so peaceful. We hiked about a mile and a half to the cliffs. It was so gorgeous. We stood way up on the cliffs for some really great pictures. It was so beautiful walking along the cliffs and looking out at the ocean. After we were done exploring the cliffs we walked over to the ocean. It was a stunning black sand beach. We were able to touch the water and it was SO cold! We ended up walking to some sand dunes to get an even prettier view of the landscape around us. It was there we noticed we could hardly see the car and realized we had a long hike to the car. After about a 3 mile hike (most of which in the sand) back to the car, we drove to our second to last stop of the day, the Gunnuhver hot springs. When we arrived we opened the car door and immediately shut it due to the horrid smell. We soon realized that we needed to get over it because it was going to smell like sulfur the whole time we were there. It was so worth the bad smell! It was like walking through clouds. It was amazing! We did get wet though, but the water was very warm, unlike the ocean. It was a really cool experience. After that we headed to our last stop, the place we had been planning on going to for months: the Blue Lagoon.

After checking into the Blue Lagoon, we headed up to the changing rooms to shower and put our suits on. It is mandatory to shower before going into the water. We then walked out to the lagoon and were amazed by how beautiful it was. The water was so warm (38 degrees Celsius or 100 degrees Fahrenheit) it felt incredible. We spent the first few minutes taking pictures in the water and exploring the lagoon. We then went to the bar in the water to order our included drink. We all got the local beer called Gull. It was probably the best beer we’ve ever had. We relaxed by the rocks drinking our beer before heading to the face mask bar. We were given a silica face mask which made us all look crazy. However, it felt so nice and made our skin so soft. We then just wandered around the water for a while. We sat in the shallow area watching the sun go down behind the mountains which so so pretty. Just before we left, we went over to the waterfall. The water felt so good on our backs. Sadly, it was already 11:30 (although it didn’t feel that late because the sun was still out) so we needed to get out of the water. On the drive back to the apartment we were all so tired from our long day, but we still enjoyed the beautiful views. We made it back to the apartment at 12:30 so we all showered, had a snack, and went straight for bed. It was such a long but incredible day! -SYD & SAM

We’re in Iceland!!!

We landed in Iceland on July 3rd around 3pm. We didn’t have the smoothest start because we could not find the car rental place. Once we did find our car, there was a light that came on. Turns out I just had the hand brake on (not my finest moment). After we had that minor issue solved we drove into Reykjavik to our apartment we will be staying in for the week. The apartment is very cute and we can see the ocean and mountains from our bedroom window. We all got situated in the apartment before we headed out for dinner.

We walked about 30 mins through the cute town to a diner called, Grillhusid. It is the oldest diner Reykjavik. We had some of the best burgers. We have found that everything here is super expensive, but we are on vacation so that is okay right? After dinner we explored the town a bit. We walked by the Harbor and to a beautiful Lutheran Church called, Hallgrimskirkja. After exploring for a bit we went home to relax, shower, and sleep. It is super strange because the sun does not set until midnight here and it rises at 3am. It’s a good thing our apartment has black-out curtains.

Today (Thursday) was our first full day in Iceland. While it was rainy today, I think we made the most of it. We slept in a bit before heading down to the Harbor to take some pictures in front of the mountains. Unfortunately, pictures do not capture the true beauty of the mountains and water. We then walked to a sculpture of a ship on the water called the Sun Voyager. The ship is supposed to represent hopes and dreams. We got our pictures just in time because it started to pour. We made the decision to get out of the rain and go grocery shopping. This turned out to be very overwhelming because most of the stuff in the store was not in English, so we had to use google translate to figure out what kind of cheese and meat we were buying. We walked our groceries back to the apartment where we made tacos for lunch. It was still raining pretty hard outside, so we used this time to plan our travel routes for the week. By this time the rain had slowed down so we walked back into town to do some souvenir shopping. Along the way we saw some amazing street art. After shopping, we went back to the apartment to plan the rest of our evening.

We decided to try a cute little restaurant on the University of Iceland campus. It was about a 35 minute walk so we stopped at the Lutheran Church again to go up to the top. We were told this had the best view of the city. This proved to be very true. It was so beautiful seeing the water, mountains, and the town below us. We then continued on our way to dinner. The restaurant was very laid back and cozy. They had a movie playing and students were sitting in booths studying. It was a very different environment than we are used to when it comes to restaurants, but it was really cool. After resting in the restaurant for a bit, we walked to the City Pond to explore the water and buildings over there. The homes along the water were so cute. There was a pretty green church on the water as well as some beautiful homes on the hill. It was such a good end to the day just walking around and exploring the town. Tomorrow is another busy day of driving and exploring Iceland and we can’t wait. -SYD & SAM

The End of Class

Monday was our last class excursion. We went to The National Portrait Gallery. We were not as excited about this because we are not huge fans of portraits. However, we saw some really cool portraits done with many different mediums. We saw a portrait of George Washington, Ronald Dahl, Ed Sheeran, Queen Elizabeth I, Elton John, Amy Winehouse, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and some paintings done by up and coming artists dealing with social issues. It was cool seeing all the different styles of paintings, photographs, and busts. When we got home we wrote our papers and hung out with the flatmates.

Tuesday was our last class day. We were very sad to say goodbye to our professor. We really loved her and the class! After class we went home to pack for our trip to Iceland. Once we finished packing we decided to head over to the location they were just filming the new James Bond movie. We took our picture on the road Daniel Craig drove on with the Aston Martin (unfortunately, we did not have one to drive- it was still cool nonetheless). After we got our picture we decided to explore the area a bit. We were in a place they call Whitehall. This is where all their government buildings are. We saw the Ministry of Defense, the place where the Prime Minister Lives, and many other buildings surrounded by armed guards. It was a really pretty area, but it was kind of scary with all the guards staring at you. After we explored a bit we went to St. James’s Park and walked on the Princess Diana memorial walk. It was absolutely beautiful. We walked across a bridge over a pretty pond with gorgeous flowers. From there you could see Buckingham Palace. It was a really pretty and relaxing walk. We then made our way to the Horse Guard Parade. This is where they have the cavalry. At exactly 4pm, they had the dismounting ceremony. It was really cool to see, but we preferred the changing of the guards because it didn’t smell like horse poop. From there we made our way back home to get prepared for our early morning. We are currently typing this in the Heathrow airport waiting to board our plane to Iceland. -SYD & SAM

Weekend Adventures

Saturday was a very early start for us. We had an all day tour with a meeting time at 8am and a 30 minute tube ride. Our tour took us on a coach bus to three locations: Windsor Castle, Bath, and Stonehenge. It took us about an hour to get to Windsor Castle and we were given a few hours to explore the grounds. The castle was absolutely beautiful. It has 700 rooms and 500 staff members. We were able to tour a few of the rooms, but we could not take pictures. We spent most of our time wandering the grounds and watching the changing of the guards. There was an ice cream stand on the grounds, which of course we had to get. As we were eating our ice cream, a few of the guards came marching by us, so we followed them. We realized they were changing guards and had a little ceremony. It was so cool to experience this. We then toured the chapel on the grounds where Meghan and Prince Harry got married. It was so pretty, but seemed smaller in person than on TV. We got back on the coach and headed to our next stop.

After a two hour ride with lunch, we made it to Bath. It was a cute town, but we didn’t have much time to explore it because we wanted to see the Roman Baths. The Baths were once believed to be healing and looked over by the gods, so when people were sick they came to bathe here. Unfortunately this was during the time of the Bubonic Plague, so everyone who used the bath ended up getting sick, and 80% of the town died. For this reason, we did not touch or drink the water, but we did try the water from the hot springs (very gross). The Baths were so cool and much bigger than I thought they would be. There were many different baths and springs. It was so cool to see this part of history. We then boarded the coach and headed to the last stop of the day.

A quick coach ride later, we arrived at Stonehenge. We did not have much time here, so we kind of just ran around the stones while stopping to take pictures quickly. Even though we were a little rushed, it was such an amazing experience, and one of the coolest things we’ve seen. It’s crazy to think about how and why the stones are there (personally, I think it was aliens). We got back on the coach and discussed how we had such a great day, but how we were all so exhausted.

We decided to sleep in on Sunday and then head to Camden Market for the afternoon. When we first around in Camden we went through a tiny but packed market selling Prada and Gucci handbags for 10 Pounds, which I am sure were 100% authentic (LOL). We we were all a little overwhelmed at this little side market so I wasn’t really sure if I would enjoy the day at Camden Market. However, Camden Market was so cool. There were so many cool vendors selling original paintings, jewelry, and other pieces of art. BUT most importantly, there were a ton of food vendors. We had the most amazing mac n’ cheese ever for lunch. After shopping around for a few hours and buying some souvenirs, we decided it was time for dessert. We got something called a bubble waffle. It was a waffle filled with vanilla ice cream, strawberries, bananas, and Nutella. It was fantastic!! I am a big fan of Amy Winehouse, who happened to live in Camden. They had a statue of her in the market and I had to get a picture with it. We ate some great food, saw some cute shops, took a few pictures and then headed home. After we went home I played Amy Winehouse’s album Back to Black and that was a perfect way to close out the very fun and busy weekend. -SYD & SAM

Catching Up…

Thursday we were able to have a lazy morning because we did not have class. Our only plans were to explore a Hindu Temple, and go to a pub with our flatmates and friends.

We visited the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Temple, which is the largest Hindu Temple outside of India. Unfortunately, we were not able to take pictures inside of the temple, so you will just have to take our word for how stunning it was. It only took 3 years to build, and everything was carved and etched by hand into the marble. All of the constructing and designing was done by volunteers. Everything was prepared in India and shipped to London to be constructed. Nothing was broken on the journey over and the Temple was built very efficiently. The inside was just at beautiful as the outside and the details were incredible. We had to take our shoes off before entering the temple which was a unique experience. We got to learn a little bit about the religion while exploring the temple. One room we were not allowed to talk because it was a room of worship and quiet reflection. The tour of the temple was amazing and we loved learning about the Hindu religion.

After the tour, we went to a pub called, The Fight Club. The inside looked like an old fashioned carnival, it was so cool. They have dart boards you can rent. The vibe of the place was really cool, and the drinks were yummy. It was a fun night out with our friends, and we will hopefully be going back to play darts.

Friday was our Harry Potter Tour. We all bought shirts specifically for the tour. Yes, we are those people. We definitely got some looks but we were having fun! The tour took us to different filming locations as well as locations that inspired the author. We walked through the narrowest street in London which was a little stressful. We realized as we were on the tour that we had already been to many of the locations, we just didn’t realize it. We ended the tour on a boat across the Thames River.

Us and one of our friends decided to explore Camden Market after the tour. We found a Harry Potter shop and we walked in still in our Harry Potter shirts, so we felt a little weird! They had wand and broom replicas and other signed items. We randomly found ourselves back at the Thames River at a park called Victoria Embankment Gardens where we got ice cream and just walked around. It was a great end to a fun day! -SYD & SAM

Day Trip To Brighton

Today was the day trip to Brighton, a cute little sea town just south of London. We met up with people from our program to catch a bus at 8:15am. We took the bus to St. Pancras Station in order to catch the train to Brighton. We were all excited to take the train for the first time. We were expecting something like the Hogwarts Express from Harry Potter, but it was just like the tube only above ground. It was still a fun way to travel. We arrived in Brighton at about 11am and took a tour of the Royal Pavilion. It was a very old and beautiful building. Unfortunately, once again, we were not allowed to take pictures inside. After the self-guided tour we were free to explore the town.

Our first stop was a fish and chips place called Harry Ramsden. We got the meal to go and walked across the street to sit at the beach by the pier. The beach in Brighton consists of pebbles, not sand. This made it easy to sit and eat there. However, there are a ton of Seagulls there and they are vicious. Our poor friend had her whole piece of fish stolen right out of the box. All the birds swooped down and swarmed us for the remainder of our meal. After we finished lunch we decided to walk along the pier.

The pier was really cute and had a lot of little shops and ice cream places. They had some rides and an arcade at the end that was also cool. It was like something from the movies. Then we headed to an upside down house. It was so bizarre to walk inside to see everything on the ceiling. It was really funny trying to figure out the best way to pose for photos to make it look like we were hanging upside down. We got kind of dizzy walking through the house because it was at a slant, and going up the stairs was quite the task.

Our next task was trying to find the famous Brighton beach huts. We could not find any information online, so we decided to just head in the direction we thought they would be. We ended up walking for about 20 minutes, but we finally found them. The walk was so worth it. The huts were so cute and they were all different colors. After taking some photos, we walked back to meet up with our flatmates for dinner. We decided to find a place for dinner on our walk back to the train station. We found a restaurant called, Tortilla which was very good. After dinner we got back on the train to head home. Today was a very fun day. We all really enjoyed Brighton! But of course, it wouldn’t be a Clark excursion without getting sunburned. England weather is tricky. -SYD & SAM

Westminster Abbey, Tate Modern, Borough Market

Monday was another double class day. We started our day off at Westminster Abbey. We were given a great tour and learned a lot about the history. There are a lot of Royal weddings, Royal funerals, and the coronation takes place there. There are also a lot of Royalty buried there and many different memorials. One memorial worth noting is Paul Dirac. He was a British physicist who conducted research at Florida State University. He is considered by many in the UK as the most important scientist next to Sir Issac Newton. FSU named our science library after him. It was really cool to have that connection there. Unfortunately we are not allowed to take pictures inside the church, but we did get some great photos outside and in some side rooms. The church was absolutely beautiful! It is in the shape of a cross which we think is so cool. It is really hard to describe how incredible all of the stained glass windows, the intricate ceiling, the small details, and grandness of the place is. It was absolutely stunning. They have four services everyday and a prayer every hour. It was a very great experience and I definitely wish I could have taken a few photos. After the tour we had a very short amount of time to walk back, make lunch, and run to class. We ended up packing sandwiches and eating in class. The class was long and hot because there is no AC. We had to take a lot of breaks. Fortunately it was our last lecture of this month. So far we have really enjoyed this class. After class we were all so tired we just went to the flat and hung out and went to bed.

Today we had an excursion to the Tate Modern. We had to specifically look at a few paintings for our assignment, but after that we had the rest of the day to explore the rest of the art. It was cool to see a different style of art than we have been looking at for our other assignments. After looking at a few of the exhibits there, we decided to explore the area a bit more before heading back to the flat. We walked to Borough Market nearby. The market had a ton of different food, drinks, and desserts. It was so cool to walk around and see the various foods. We got one fresh squeezed lemonade and orange mango juice which were delicious. Once home, we did some homework before heading to the basement for pizza night. Us and our flatmates decided to go for a walk to the park nearby. We just wandered around the city, enjoying the cool air because our rooms don’t have AC. It was a good day and a fun evening. Tomorrow we are leaving bright and early to head to Brighton, a little seaside town 2 hours south of London. We are super excited! -SYD & SAM

Weekend Recap

Thursday Morning we went to breakfast like usual, then met up with our class to head over to the British Museum to explore the Edvard Munch Exhibit. The purpose of going to the exhibit was to examine art and how it relates to emotion. We are by no means art critics or art enthusiast but we found his art very cool. He has a very dark style and his art was filled with emotion. After the exhibit we went out front to take some pictures. This turned out to be a horrible idea because Sydney got hit in the face by a bird. The bird flew from behind and hit her right in the cheek and the wing went in her eye. We have some pretty funny pictures of her with a squinty eye. Other than the bird catastrophe our day trip to the museum was so fun. After chilling at the flat for the afternoon we went to a place called Maxwell’s for shakes. We ordered what they call “freakshakes” and they were massive (pictures below to prove it)!

Friday was a beautiful day and we did not have class so we decided to head over to Hyde Park for a picnic lunch. We sat by a fountain and it was a really pretty view. After our lunch we ended up exploring the park for a few hours. It was absolutely massive. We ended up at a little lake that had paddle boats. We have never been in one before so we decided to give it a try. It was a lot of fun just playing music and paddling around the lake with our flatmates. We then walked back to the flat to do some homework, make dinner, and get ready to go out. We went to a pub called the Rising Sun and had a few drinks with our flatmates. We were all having a good time when some guy came up and gave the whole table (of 6 girls) his number. We thought this was very bold and used the napkin with his number on it to wipe up a spill. We then headed home with the intention of playing Uno but we were all so tired we just went to bed.

Saturday we had the plan of going to Piccadilly Circus. However, we made what we thought was going to be a small detour in China Town. However, that small detour ended up being four hours long. We stumbled upon a street performer and saw that there was a whole line of guys waiting to perform after. They all had very great music so we decided to stay. We stayed and watched 4 solo guys and a duo perform. I think all of us fell in love with them. We tipped them and some of us even bought their CDs. We stayed after their performance to get pictures with them. We made it on to one of their instagram stories (lol). Somewhere between all the music we got lunch at a cute little restaurant, and had amazing Chinese food. After the performers finished, we finally made it to Piccadilly Circus but were a little underwhelmed by it. We did take some cute pictures though! It turned out to be such a fun day filled with amazing music.

Sunday was another great day. We all slept in and had a chill morning getting ready for the day. We booked a tour to the Tate Britain where we explored the Vincent van Gogh exhibit. His work is so amazing, it was so cool to see some of his most famous works up close in person. Once back in the flat, we booked some tours with our flatmates for our long weekend next weekend. We then went to Franco Manca for some sourdough pizza. It was so yummy. This weekend was very busy but so much fun! -SYD & SAM
